Joss Whedon on Sexuality and Female Characters
Last week, Kay shared some of her favorite Nerd HQ videos from San Diego Comic-Con. She also mentioned there was one from Joss Whedon, which she hadn’t watched yet. Since I’m a fan and the blog has featured his words of wisdom previously on creating great female characters, I made the time to watch the video. (Scroll to about the 25-minute mark to find the start.) Nathan Fillion hosts the panel, and both men keep it humorous. Multiple questions were asked of Whedon about his female characters. Right off the bat, he addresses characters and sexuality, which has been a topic of discussion in the Star Wars fandom of late. Recommended viewing for anyone aspiring to strengthen their portrayal of female characters.
Whedon on feminism: “If you put it in fiction, people internalize it.”
