Last year at GeekGirlCon’s Star Wars Expanded Universe panel, an audience member posed the question – Where should I start? In our Expanded Universe where the books and comics present one continuous canon, this question pops up with regularity. I’m always interested to see how fans answer it. It’s natural to want to pitch our personal favorites in response, but not everyone who’s asking is going to have the same tastes. So when I’m presented with that question by a curious potential fan, I try to return a question to him or her before considering my response – What is it that you like?

The Life and Death of Padmé – Without Lore, Is It Just Lipservice for the Leading Lady of Star Wars?

The reception of Darth Plagueis serves to illustrate one of the ways the EU can be used effectively to reach a broad range of fans, including those who aren’t necessarily EU-focused but would be interested in movie-focused stories. The still underdeveloped backstories of the saga’s two female leads, Padmé Amidala and Leia Organa, provide the perfect opportunity to bring depth to the EU lore while also tapping into the interests of female fans.

Heir to the Empire Anniversary Edition

The Twentieth Anniversary Edition of Heir to the Empire went on sale yesterday. When the cover art was first revealed, I commented briefly about why Timothy Zahn’s novel – and for that matter the entire Thrawn Trilogy – is rightfully considered a classic of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Now that the special edition is out, I thought I’d share a few additional thoughts.
