A Peek at Dragon Con’s 2018 Costuming Exhibit

Dragon Con is such a big genre-bursting pop culture convention that it’s easy to discover something new every year no matter how long you’ve been attending. I first stumbled upon the Costuming Exhibit in 2016 and was wowed by the look at costumes worn at Dragon Cons past.

This year visiting it again was on my want list and I’m glad I found the time for it. It’s a small room but packed to the brim with mannequins and dress forms covered in creations that the Costuming Track has invited into the exhibit as well as ones that applied to get in. There are historical outfits, movie recreations, and original designs.

At a con known for its attendees’ exquisite costuming, it’s nice to have the chance to check out some that you don’t have to shout out to anyone to look at. The approximately 10 minutes I waited to get in on Friday was definitely worth it.

Here’s a peek inside. And yes, that first one is The Shape of Water-inspired dress that was the Judge’s Choice Winner in the 2018 Her Universe Fashion Show

She grew up wanting to be an astronaut. After seeing Star Wars, she wanted to be Princess Leia, Han Solo, and an astronaut. Life’s taken her on a bit of a different path, but she’s okay with that. Kay is FANgirl's resident geek fashion expert and co-host of the Hyperspace Theories podcast. She reviews books and movies for the site with a heart for storytelling and a mind that likes to analyze. Kay's been a guest on various podcasts sharing her love and knowledge of storytelling, film-making, fashion, and of course, Star Wars. Most days are filled with her work as a creative services professional - designing websites & branding, photographing, voice acting, editing, and more. Kay spends the little bit of free time she has reading, costuming, and, of course, making pew pew noises. She would pick up more jobs and hobbies if she was a Time Lord.
