Interview: Pablo Hidalgo talks The Essential Reader’s Companion

Pablo Hidalgo’s much-anticipated Star Wars: The Essential Reader’s Companion marks its release date next Tuesday, October 2. Earlier in the summer, I had the privilege to help Pablo and his editor at Del Rey, Erich Schoeneweiss, by giving the manuscript a fan read. I’ve been looking forward to finally getting to talk about it with everyone else.

Over the last few months, Erich has been slowly releasing teasers of the amazing original art included in the Reader’s Companion to various websites, including my blog, EUCantina, and io9. One of the pieces I was most excited to see is one of the kisses on my list in my Valentine’s Day post for Suvudu, The Beat of the Heart – Star Wars Kisses: the first kiss between Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila. You can check out Chris Scalf’s great rendition of it below. The original art of Jaina and Jag’s first kiss created for that post made it into the Reader’s Companion, too, and seeing it in print on the page is incredibly cool.

I also had the chance to interview Pablo about his experience writing the Reader’s Companion. Check out his answers for some great insight into the book and its development, as well as two more art pieces from the book. (A big thank you to Erich for sending along the art.)
