The Hunger Games Wraps on Mockingjay

With The Avengers: Age of Ultron deep into shooting in London, and Star Wars Episode VII still adapting to the ramifications of Harrison Ford’s injury, another major franchise drew its shoot to a close at the end of last week with the final day of Mockingjay Part 2. Director Francis Lawrence marked the occasion with a tweet, and producer Nina Jacobson shared a photograph of the core cast’s heartfelt reaction.

The promotional campaign for Mockingjay Part 1 has begun in earnest, too. Last month the Hunger Games official site posted this First Look video with Julianne Moore, who takes on the role of District 13 leader Alma Coin. She discusses the themes of the story, Coin’s guiding principles, and more. She also notes a storytelling point we’ve discussed on the blog previously: that the novel only shows Coin through Katniss’ eyes, while the film can provide a more objective picture to the movie audience.

As with the previous films, Lionsgate is rolling out some of their promotion in the style of in-universe propaganda. Mockingjay Part 1‘s District Heroes posters provide a chilling look at the Capitol’s public relations counter-offensive after the events of Catching Fire. And how about this creepy message from President Snow (with a special guest at his shoulder)?

    While I can barely wait to see M1 and M2, that photograph of the cast hug along with the knowledge that they have brought the story to a close makes me want to cry. More sadness for those who were not there as the series wrapped, like Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Lenny Kravitz.

    However, I love the very stylish all-white video of Snow and guest. What an elegant piece of propaganda. Brilliant.

    Is it time for Mockingjay, Part I yet?
