Anthologies Are Where It’s At
Recently a new anthology, Empower, was announced, featuring “a special collection of short stories by top women writers from some of your favorite shows.” This follows on the heels of the successful all-female-written Athena’s Daughters and Women Destroy Science Fiction anthologies.
On Cons and Comics
The news from WonderCon included a number of notable panels. Comic Book Resources reports on one panel “Discussing “Strong Women” with DeConnick, Simone and More” and another with “Marjorie Liu on her Career, “Astonishing X-Men” and “X-23”.” Bleeding Cool debriefed Gail Simone’s panel. IGN reports that “Girl Power Dominates the Falling Skies Panel.”
Alan Kistler at TheMarySue conducted a great interview with comics author Kelly Sue DeConnick, focusing on her titles Pretty Deadly and Captain Marvel.
Rachel Edidin at Wired reports on the Carol Corps fans of Captain Marvel: “The Minor-League Superhero Who Changed the Face of Fandom.”
On a less positive note, Gavia Baker-Whitelaw at The Daily Dot reports on the sexist anti-fangirl t-shirt sold at WonderCon, and the sadly predictable reaction from the vendor and its supporters.
Gatekeeping In Fandom: Bring Down This Wall
On related topics, Amanda Marcotte asks What Are Misogynist Geeks So Afraid Of? in light of current upheavals like the awful backlash against Janelle Asselin for her criticism of a Teen Titans comic cover. Marjorie Liu also blogs about sexism and harassment in comics, including the Asselin incident.
Author Greg Rucka unleashes some intense emotions in his blog post “Contents Under Pressure” when he writes about gatekeeping and sexism in the SFF fandom.
Lauren Davis at io9 asks “Why Do We Care So Much About What Female Superheroes Wear, Anyway?” and gives insightful answers.

Don’t miss this great fanart on Deviant Art with Anna from Frozen as Captain America. Haleigh Foutch at Collider reveals secrets of the Frozen production process from their panel. Inside the Magic reports that the Disney Stores promise to have more Frozen merchandise in stock shortly.
Wonder Woman
Susana Polo at TheMarySue zings that “Forbes Conducts Fawning Interview With Zack Snyder, But Hey, He Talks About Wonder Woman.” She also writes about the Black Widow scene from The Winter Soldier that Scarlett Johanssen suggested be deleted.
MoviePilot highlighted some cool fan art showing Gal Godot in a classic Wonder Woman attire.
2014 Is Still The Year of the Fangirl
At Medium.com’s Extra Credit, Lillian Skye writes about how Star Wars has inspired her dream to pursue a career in journalism. Patty at Everyday Fangirl shares her thoughts on Her Universe’s Year of the Fangirl. The latest Fangirls of the Day are: Alejandra, PinkLisa, Lisa, Rachel, Leia, Maria, Serena, Kelli, Kirsten, Sarai, Deanna, Diane, Evie, Katelyn, Angela, Christina, Modestina, Sue, Lisa, Jewels, Brittny, Kim, Cali, and Bryony. Cosplayer Bria from the Lady Rogue and White Hot Room was featured on May 7th, and vlogger Amanda Jean was highlighted on May 11th.
