Star Wars Expanded Universe and The Clone Wars Roundup: July 2013
In between San Diego Comic-Con and Celebration Europe, we spotted several items of note. We’ve been keeping a list, so let’s round them up.
Legacy II: Prisoner of the Floating World #5 closes out the first arc in the series and opens up an exciting future for heroine Ania Solo. I loved the arc’s conclusions, and at some point we’ll have our review here. Until then, Roqoo Depot and Blog Full of Words are a couple of sites to offer up oreat reviews. Honorary fangirl Jawa James interviewed the Legacy writers Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman; you can watch at Big Shiny Robot.
Bryan Young of Full of Sith podcast talked to Tommy Yune, the creative director at Harmony Gold, TC Carson (Mace Windu, The Clone Wars), Stephen Stanton (Tarkin and Gascon, The Clone Wars), and Erich Schoeneweiss of Del Rey.
Over at the official Star Wars Blog, Jennifer Heddle wrapped up the SDCC Star Wars books panel. She previewed what’s to come for those who weren’t there.
Kenobi, John explained, is basically a western set in space, and I commented on the brilliant approach John took of showing us Obi-Wan through the eyes of strangers who have no idea who this mysterious newcomer is. Frank and I took turns talking about the forthcoming Razor’s Edge by Martha Wells, which focuses on Leia and how she reacts when she meets up with a crew of Alderaanian pirates; Maul: Lockdown by Joe Schreiber, which is an intense, violent thriller with ties to Darth Plagueis; and Honor Among Thieves by James S.A. Corey, which I boldly proclaimed as a possible successor to the Brian Daley Han Solo novels.
Then J.W. Rinzler talked a bit about the extensive archive searches he undertakes when writing a book like The Making of Return of the Jedi, which comes out this fall.
Apparently, either the fandom has taken a chillax pill or talk of killing Luke Skywalker isn’t quite the big deal it used to be.
We unfortunately didn’t have much time for audience questions, but when asked if there was ever any talk of killing off Luke Skywalker at the end of the Fate of the Jedi series, Frank revealed that he’s been trying to kill off Luke for a while! So you can take that up with him on the Star Wars Books Facebook page.
Heddle also took to Twitter to reassure fans that the Powers That Be aren’t trying to make them suffer with the lack of news.

Over at Slate, working screenwriter Ken Miyamoto, pondered the possibilities sketched out his fanfiction ideas for the what-if scenario of Anakin never turning to the dark side. Literally a few thousand of these were written in the fandom, mostly from the Prequel Trilogy days. Some are quite amazing.
For fans of The Clone Wars, as first reported by RebelForce Radio, the DVD and Blu-ray release of Season Five will occur on October 15, along with a Collector’s Edition of all five seasons. Here’s the trailer for the video release. Neither set, however, will contain any of the “bonus content” for the series.
