San Diego Comic-Con – Friday

San Diego Comic-Con has two Star Wars Expanded Universe panels today: Dark Horse’s Star Wars Comics: Here and Now and LucasBooks’ Writer’s Studio: Behind the Scenes with Star Wars Authors.

Update: Newsarama has the best recap of the Dark Horse panel I’ve seen. A few notables:

  • Star Wars’ artist D’Anda noted, “Something I realized now that I’m older is that I didn’t draw Darth Vader as a kid because he’s a pain in the ass – that hasn’t changed.”
  • In another upcoming Star Wars issue, Leia will pay a visit to the remains of Alderaan and “makes a terrifying discovery there.”
  • In Star Wars: Legacy, Ania Solo will “go out into the wider galaxy with her new compatriots, and she’ll meet up with characters from the previous Legacy series.”
  • There is also a great run down in the article of what each writer and artist said when asked why Star Wars has remained relevant for so long.

From the Writer’s Panel hosted by Star Wars Books, Club Jade Storyfied tweets from their contributor James. The cover for Star Wars: Empire and Rebellion: Honor Among Thieves – SWEARHAT for short – by James S.A. Corey was revealed. Jeffrey Brown talked briefly about his Jedi Academy book; you can find more about it in this Newsarama interview from last month. Moderator Leland Chee set expectations early, and no new books news was announced. Roqoo Depot has two posts this week: a compilation of author news around the web and a recap post.

Later in the day, Ashley Eckstein will sit on the The Most Dangerous Women at Comic-Con: Dual Identities hosted by Action Flick Chick Katrina Hill. There are two Star Wars Collectible panels, a Star Wars Origami panel, and the GEEK Star Wars Roundtable Live.

Club Jade did a nice roundup of panels last week, and the one I’m interested in hearing about is Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over The World? The panel name is also the title of host Anne Jamison’s upcoming book.

Fanfiction has recently moved into the spotlight, with fic authors getting impressive book deals and Amazon announcing Kindle Worlds. But there’s a lot more to the story than Fifty Shades of Grey. Panelists Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Christina Lauren (tby789 and LolaShoes, Beautiful Bastard), Rachel Caine (Morganville Vampires, Weather Wardens), V. Arrow (aimmyarrowshigh, The Panem Companion), and Heidi Tandy (heidi8, Organization for Transformative Works) discuss how fan writing-from missing scenes to remixes and crossovers-and other fanworks re-imagine the boundaries of everything from sexuality and gender to character and authorship. They’ll discuss the way fan culture is challenging today’s entertainment and publishing industry norms, and consider the value a noncommercial creative space can bring to emerging and even professional writers and artists. Moderated by Anne Jamison (Fic: Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over the World). Friday July 19, 2013 2:00pm – 3:00pm. Room 29A.
