Fangirls Around the Web: March 10, 2013
Let’s kick off this edition of Fangirls Around the Web with updates from the world of Star Wars. Today’s picture was featured on the official Star Wars Facebook page.
Congratulations to Amy Ratcliffe for her latest article in Star Wars Insider, talking about the Yoda and Indiana Jones sculptures in a new park in San Anselmo, California, on land donated by George Lucas.
On The Clone Wars front, Lisa Granshaw reported for Blastr on the season finale. Bombad Radio podcast interviewed Cat Taber and Anna Graves. And Lauren Berkley of Forces of Geek interviewed Sam Witwer.
Star Wars senior editor Jennifer Heddle shared a fantastic post for the Star Wars Blog about the challenges in balancing her roles as editor for the Expanded Universe fiction and a lifelong major Star Wars fangirl.
Also at the Star Wars Blog, Holly Frey reports on the increasing number of Princess Leias who ran in this year’s costume-laden Disney Princess half-marathon.
Speaking of Lucasfilm’s new owners, Disney Blog posted a great feature titled “Disney Damsels, Not in Distress” and featuring favorites like Edna from The Incredibles, Kim Possible, Merida, Rapunzel from Tangled, and Tinker Bell. Elizabeth Rappe at Jezebel discusses Oz the Great and Powerful, with an intriguing look at E.L. Baum’s fictional work as pro-women in a time when that wasn’t the norm.
Damsels in distress also was the theme of the new Feminist Frequency video discussing negative tropes about women in videogames. With new releases from Starcraft and Tomb Raider, female characters in games has been a much-discussed topic around the web. We’ll be coming back to that topic later this week.
For Women’s History Month, io9 shares “The 10 Greatest (Fictional) Female Scientists We Want to Be When We Grow Up.” Business Insider profiles the real-life “Women of NASA.” And Comic Book Resources features “two of the best-known female superhero comics writers ever: Ann Nocenti and Louise Simonson.”
Finally, Natalie Zutter at Tor.com discusses how “New Catching Fire ‘Capitol Portraits’ Barely Hide the Coming Revolution”:
It feels like all the portraits have been leading up to this one picture of Katniss in quiet dissent. There are a few important distinctions to note here, the biggest being that unlike everyone else in the Capitol portraits, Katniss is not sitting.
Not only that, but she is holding a white rose—the symbol for President Snow—pointed downwards while supporting herself on an empty chair. Those hungry for an idol will see Katniss as the beautiful virginal victor they want to see. And those hungry for rebellion will see Katniss, dressed as the mockingjay and staring directly at the viewer, advocating for Snow’s overthrow.
Finally, a reminder that the Year of the Fangirl is on! Grace of the Lakehouse Forums kicked off the Fangirl of the Day this week. Then congratulations were in order for Dunc over at ClubJade for her appearance as Fangirl of the Day. And closing out the week were Star Wars Expanded Universe cosplayers The Lady Rogues. In addition to highlighting awesome fangirls and playing a heroine on The Clone Wars, Ashley Eckstein announced last week over at Star War Books Facebook page that Her Universe will be creating products with the Expanded Universe fans in mind!
