FANgirl on ForceCast

After last Monday’s blog, Luke Skywalker Must Die, triggered an extended discussion during and after last week’s ForceCast, the show’s hosts, Jason and Jimmy Mac, graciously invited me to appear on this week’s show to discuss the topic further. We’ve scheduled my guest stint for around 9:00 p.m. Eastern tonight (Tuesday, May 24) during the live show. The recorded podcasts are made available on Fridays on the ForceCast website, as well as their mobile app.

I’m really looking forward to your visit to the ForceCast tonight. Due to being busy, I came to this story rather late, but since I’ve had the chance to read your initial Blog and the follow up article, I can not express just how much I agree with every aspect of your aforementioned posts. Having also caught up with the ForceCast I do very much feel that Jason was looking through Film only Fan-Goggles. I can understand how someone who just loves only the films could not imagine Luke being killed off; however, as those of us (Like Jimmy Mac) who have been following the EU since Splinter of the Mind’s Eye have seen the decline of the EU since the close of NJO.

We know that Lucas Books and Del Ray are going back to the Trilogy format from the 90s (i.e. The Thrawn Novels) but if the kind of storytelling we’ve received remains the same, with the same kind of authors who are writing for themselves and not the fans, things will only become worse. I don’t want to write my own article here, but I look forward to hearing you blast Jason (as much as I love the guy) for calling those like us “Kooks” and hope we hear from Kyle Newman who is likely to be more on your side then Jason’s.

Hi, Fangirl! I just heard your interview on the ForceCast from May 27. (Yeah, I’m a bit behind.) I just want to say that I totally agree with you! Either Luke needs to die or SOMETHING dramatic has to happen. The books have gotten too tame and safe, and there’s no suspense anymore. (OK, there were some good parts of the story regarding the fall of Jacen Solo, but I *know* that none of the movie characters are in any kind of danger!)

One of my favorite moments in the EU was Chewbacca’s death in ’99. And no one has mentioned this point yet: Chewbacca continues to appear in all kinds of stories! He was in REVENGE OF THE SITH after that; he was in the bestseller DEATH TROOPERS; he was even in his own miniseries the same year that VECTOR PRIME came out! So Lucas Books could easily kill Luke Skywalker and still tell compelling stories at earlier points in Luke’s life.

As for Jason’s point that the books aren’t a big enough stage for that story, well, GL is never gonna do an Episode VII, so we’re not getting that story any other way except in novels or comics.

Anyway, thanks again for opening up such a great, healthy debate! :)

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to stop by. Sometimes I have to catch up on the ForceCast. Tame is a good word for it.

(OK, there were some good parts of the story regarding the fall of Jacen Solo, but I *know* that none of the movie characters are in any kind of danger!)

That’s why I was surprised they told us no one big was going to die in FotJ. Took all the suspense out of the series.

      Great point.

Since May 27th Lucas did an interview saying he wanted to do more non-SW stuff, so I’m more convinced we won’t see Ep VII.
